During a walk I saw a glimmer far away, perhaps the light reflecting on a small lake? A moment later it was gone, I’ll never know because I couldn’t get closer..
A dizzying exhibition
Looking at art is a complex process. Your first look is uninhibited, but soon you start looking for meaning. We are eager to understand and interpret art. But it is that first moment, before understanding, that Suzan Drummen wants to last as long as possible. The openness and unprejudicedness of that first look is for her the core: to be there and to look, that’s what matters!
She says: ‘I don’t understand the world, I’m amazed, deluded and enchanted again and again. I am constantly probing everything. The material helps me to feel and experience, to simply exist. While working, I sometimes manage to celebrate and sharpen life. The extremely state of the world nowadays touches me deeply, I try to react towards it with intense dedication.’
When you see a space reflected in a sphere, you start to see the space differently. But in a lot of convex mirrors together, the space becomes dizzying. Your eyes can no longer read all those mirrors. Your eyes start focusing differently, to try to oversee the whole. That moment, of being able to grasp something and not grasp it at the same time, always plays a role in the works of Suzan Drummen.
At exhibitions abroad, Suzan Drummen noticed how our reaction to art is culturally influenced. In China people reacted with shouts and laughter, in Japan people often became silent. The Dutch seem to analyze more, looking for meaning.
This is precisely why Suzan Drummen likes to work with people from all kinds of cultural backgrounds. The floor installations are particularly laborious, small shiny parts are placed one by one, in patterns, loose on the floor. For the exhibition in TAC, a team of TAC volunteers, The Living Room for Refugees, TAC neighbors and family members worked for days.
During the exhibition, there will be performances with musicians and dancers. There will also be short films stemming from previous projects.
